This week, I’m sharing my first guest blog post written by Décor Aid, a New York-based design firm known for their high-end, full-service interior design. We collaborated on a topic and landed on ways to incorporate fashion trends into you home which relates back to my Fashion background. Please enjoy their take on this topic as they share how you can achieve this!
Fashion, much like interior design, is a way to represent yourself to the world. It’s a wordless way to project your style, personality, and interests to others in an expressive way. Fashion, also much like interior design, is constantly evolving, with runway shows getting more avant-garde, textural, and intricate by the year, with designers taking big risks and seeing big payoffs. Why should these delicate details and bold statements be limited to clothing? It’s time to take a note from fashion and incorporate some of the emerging trends into your home.
And while many take these ideas to be fleeting trends, they actually have staying power, drawing from long-adored fabrics, shades, silhouettes, and materials to make for a unique spin on the traditional. Here are 5 ideas we’ve collected from the runway that you can gain inspiration from for your next home update.
Decadent Embellishments
Minimalism may be having a moment in interior design, but maximalism is trending hard in the fashion world. Pieces with heavy embellishments, from beading to threading, pleating, and other detailed ornamentation can be found on runways all over, where they are furthermore layered with other detailed garments. Take a more maximalist approach to your space, choosing pieces with embellishments, engravings, and texture over more simplistic pieces. While you may gravitate towards a clean silhouette, take some time to consider how you would use a piece with a heavier figure or carvings and embellishments along its frame.
When trying to bring a more layered, fulfilling look to your space, don’t solely focus on the furniture.
Look for embellished pieces in reference to fabrics, too. Pillows with a similar intent to that on the runway will feature different layered textures, combining matte and shine, beading, fabric combinations, and more. You will be surprised at how much your eye is still drawn around the room from an individual piece to individual piece. And don’t worry about making sure your embellishments match — that’s been out of fashion for a while now.

Vintage Prints
We’re going to let you in on a tried and true design secret that transcends industries: vintage will never go out of style. There’s something about looking to the past with a fresh perspective that is romantic and inspired, and in the case of vintage prints, still refreshing to see on the runway.

This season, we’re seeing a lot of prints that have been inspired by vintage florals, making their age known through the use of more neutral and yellowed shades that imply wear. Instead of more bright, feminine shades, we’re seeing greys, taupes, and mauves, with touches of navy for added depth.
When considering an accent piece, look for vintage pieces with their original fabric. You’ll notice many thrift shops and vintage boutiques carry furniture, like chaise lounge chairs or small accent chairs that have their original fabric intact — likely a noticeably vintage print. Instead of reupholstering, consider keeping this original fabric intact, and if necessary, having it professionally cleaned to make it feel new. Vintage prints are easy to spot and are actually quite statement-making pieces when used properly.
Velvet
A fabric that has a timeless elegance, velvet has proven that it is here to stay. While this luxe fabric takes breaks from the limelight, 2019 shows that velvet will be back in full force in both our clothing and our homes. Velvet has an appearance that leaves your figure looking like it was dipped in heavy decadence, and velvet lined furniture is no different. We’re giving minimalism a break and taking cues from Hollywood regency and art deco styles for a luxe like no other.
Besides its appearance, velvet is one of the most comforting fabrics, and for those that prioritize feeling comfortable in their space over aesthetics, fear not—you won’t even have to choose with velvet. We’re still having trouble deciding what’s more comfortable: lounging on a velvet couch or relaxing in a velvet jumpsuit? We’ll let you be the judge.

Femme Earthy Tones
Take a look at any runway shows for the 2019 season, and you’ll notice a trend in color: earthy tones that veer on a more feminine side, like sandy beiges, bright neutrals, and hints of blush. While the neutrals we’re used to in both the home and on the rack veers more towards the masculine with hints of navy, grey, and dark taupes, this year is all about bringing a more feminine and lighthearted nature to it. When seeking a neutral earthy shade for your walls, look to a more feminine version to brighten it up in a refreshing way, like a sandy beige instead of a more drab ‘greige’ version. Embracing femininity will be huge in 2019, and even for those with a more masculine taste, you’re sure to find shades that meet in neutral (no pun intended) territory.
Coastal Chic
Californians, listen up. Your standard style is getting an upgrade on the runway and off. While boho-chic has always been in the back of any fashionista’s mind, it took center stage in a number of runway shows for 2019 collections. Shades of khaki were punctuated with red and blue embellishments, tassels, and other beachy accents. Sure, we’re heard of coastal interior design, but this style screams coastal fashion. If you love the boho-chic look, take notes from these fresh runway styles and incorporate them into your interior design for an upgraded version. Tassels are back in, with plenty of opportunities to be used on pillows, lampshades, rugs, and decorative accents. There should be a strong sense of neutrals as a base in the space, but use boho flourishes that boast natural textiles and beachy aesthetics.
